BRIDGERS IN JUNE 2021

Updated: Jul 4, 2021

SUMMARY OF JUNE 2021

We entered the month of June feeling very optimistic and hopeful, the previous nine months have seen us working within the Covid restrictions to maintain the standards and quality of all of our displays and projects, and, this wasn`t easy or practical, but we managed, although, we did have a couple of problems during the lockdown, our pit pony was damaged, we don`t know if it was deliberate or accidental, but, thanks to Weldfast of Leigh and our own expertise a repair was soon completed, also Included in this nine months was the decoration of Colliers Corner and the Shield to celebrate Christmas and Easter, the displays were amazing and seemed to lift the spirits of our group, local residents, visitors and people passing through Howe Bridge.

Over the 2nd May bank holiday weekend we had a very successful 3 day plant sale at Atherton Town FC, Excellent venue, record attendances & record sales, we were very lucky to have lots of volunteers to help with the sales.

Several tools and petrol mower donated to Bridgers by B & Q Leigh, a very generous and much needed injection of community support, selection of tools and equipment bought by group, lots of running about and computer bashing,

Planning application to put storage unit on Colliers Corner was turned down because the unit would be too close to a watercourse, the application had been quite intense and long winded with lots of problems and endless communication between, Wigan, United Utilities and ourselves, BUT, an

Alternative site was found by Wigan Council at Atherton Town FC, and eventually the storage unit was delivered and put in place, an excellent site with all facilities.

Storage unit was locked with no keys available and the door welded shut, eventually we opened the unit and found it full of rubbish, now been cleared, cleaned and new locks fitted, but we found a leak in roof.

Paint and other necessary equipment and materials bought, hopefully all essential jobs will be done soon.

Tools, equipment & materials moved from Home, Anne`s and bowling club, just a few items left at other sites and these will soon be moved as well.

Extensive and very time consuming work has been done on Colliers Corner, all boxes etc cleared and filled with Summer Plants, general maintenance of corner ongoing, strimming, cleaning, mowing, watering and lots of TLC applied, but, we recently had some damage caused by vandalism to the willow heron and the bird stand, this was reported to police, great work by Frank May & Gerry Archbold to repair the heron and for the repair of the Bird Table.

The Howe Bridge Shield display has been re-designed and re-planted for Summer, grassed area around shield cut to highlight the shield.

Moss Bank nurseries very generously donated the plants for the shield and, all of the plants we had left over from this and our other projects were donated by us F O C to several local groups / organisations.

At the side of the Shield we planted a Memorial Flowering Cherry Tree { Prunus Subhirtella Pendula Rubra } in memory of everyone who have been loved and lost during the pandemic years of 2020 / 2021.

Jubilee Garden has cleared, cleaned and re-planted for Summer, repairs to the area and also “ Phil`s Walk “ sign were needed and completed.

Old Manor Park Garden renovated and planted up for Summer, looks great !

Wigan Council have cleared the weeds on Leigh Road through the village and have done a terrific job.

Moss Bank Nurseries have re-fitted the planters to the Prom filled with summer plants,

Our Dementia group`s “ Memories Tea Room “ re-opened on June 7th following months of closure because of the COVID Pandemic restrictions, to start with, the tea room will only open Monday, Tuesday & Wednesday for the first couple of months during which we will monitor and assess the operation and situation.}

During the lockdowns we have held weekly ZOOM & WHATSAPP sessions to keep in touch with our dementia and tea room volunteers and the people who attend our events, I have also done over one hundred & thirty Quizzes which i sent out to ALL of the groups on our address / contact lists { over thirty groups / organisations } 1000s of people reached.

The large plant boxes outside the tea room and Town Hall have been cleared, cleaned and refilled with Summer plants { curtesy of the Bridgers }

Dementia Buddy Guardian Angels scheme has continued to supply our devices to online requests and orders, but, the social events including Luncheon clubs & Coffee mornings are still waiting for clearance from Wigan MBC before we can continue with these events.

We DESPERATELY need some more volunteers, at present we have a core of only FIVE very committed and enthusiastic volunteers and we do everything apart from mowing Colliers Corner, ideas for recruitment needed !!

LOTS of thanks to, Atherton Town FC { Especially Gerald Butler } B & Q Leigh, Moss Bank Nurseries, Wigan MBC, Plant Sale volunteers, Tea Room volunteers, Anthony Hughes { Tea Room Manager / Chef } Cain Transport, Gardeners Bowling Club, Elected Councillors, Paintmaster { Hazel Grove } and the biggest thankyou goes to our FANTASTIC VOLUNTEERS----Onwards & Upwards !!
